Why a Renters’ Rights Blog
I started this project after receiving a letter from my landlord saying they would no longer pursue nearly $3,000 in supposed back charges for my parking spot. For months, I’d been going back and forth with them via emails and phone calls, knowing full well they were consulting legal counsel the entire time.
Then came the statement that pushed me over the edge:
“While we do have the right to pursue those underpayments based on the lease terms, we’ve made the decision to waive the back charges in this instance. This choice reflects our commitment to fairness and transparency, and we want to do what feels right given the full context.”
Reading that, I was more infuriated than relieved. Their words“fairness and transparency” rang hollow. It wasn’t generosity, it was damage control, likely recommended by their lawyers. There is no provision in my lease or in the law that gave them the right to “pursue underpayments” AFTER they tried to illegally increase my parking fee by 400%. It was simply another lie on top of many others.
I’d already been venting to friends about this little saga, but it became clear this wasn’t just about me. If they tried this with me, I’m sure they’ve done it to other long-term tenants and probably gotten away with it. Maybe my neighbors will see this and realize they can file a complaint too.
This blog isn’t just about calling out what’s wrong, it’s about finding solutions. It’s about showing how tenants fought back, what resources actually worked, and what steps led to real change. By sharing both the struggles and the wins, we create a living record of resilience that other Newark renters can learn from and use in their own battles.
This is where Newark renters can tell their stories, the good, the bad, and everything in between. Housing struggles can make you feel isolated, but speaking up reminds us we’re not alone. Whether it’s a mold problem finally resolved, a rent hike overturned, or a small victory that gave you back your peace of mind, every story matters. Each one helps someone else see what’s possible.
Your voice can spark change. Submit your story (it doesn't have to be perfectly written,) read others’ experiences, and join a growing community of renters working to make Newark a fairer, safer place to live.
